Success by definition

In this competing world people run behind success. Benchmark them selves against someone else and get determinant to chase the goals that the set by themselves. If we look around us , mostly success in life is measured by the monitory aspects in life how much we earn , how stable is our job , how educated , how many vehicles ,how many properties etc …

If you have seen the movie Lottery Ticket where Bow wow wins a 370 Million lottery , did u notice how worried he becomes soon as he gets to know that he is rich. So I doubt the benchmark that is used currently by this community. Its globally acceptable ( in my view ) that success of an individuals life can be measured by how happy the person is doing there job/business , how healthy the family relationships are and the recognition of their voice in the current community. By recognition I mean that individuals who is respected by others in the community.

In order to be successful how hard should we work or rather how smart. It depends on the community that you operate in basically. And how matured your opinion is on certain facts , for an example for a teenager having “Fun” would be like the most important thing. But when time passes things get more complicated than you would imagine and you would always always try to asses the realistic nature of existing problems , how they would effect your lives and the people around you. Most decisions that you would make will eventually effect just more than you. And this can only be experienced and not thought trough a class room session.

Everyone has goals in their lives. At least in my case , soon after A/L examinations , since I was not competitive enough for the University selection according to the local government I had to look out for other means of education. Only goal I had was to graduate soon and luckily or unluckily I didn’t have much to invest at all. Anyhow gradually started off with Professional Body exam which was far more expensive than I had expected and I had to postpone following that program and switch to a local examination. Since the affordability was acceptable I continued with that hoping to graduate in 3 years and yes I completed the program. Due to some luck in my destiny I was also able to complete the Professional Body exams under a sponsorship ;) And today my academic goals are met and I have to set them up a little more higher. Hopefully I can get them right and to work well.

So for one person success in life might be the achievement of ones individual goals , for some (mostly for the ladies ) it might be getting married soon. And there are a few more who would have there journeys set to reach a particular designation CEO , COO and Architect etc … Or someone might even have multiple goals. The whole point of this article is to express my view that it doesn’t actually matter what goals a person has. And how many have achieved them. Its a matter of having a few goals that is worth being achieved and at the same time contributes to the society or at least a few people around you to make their lives better.

The Local mindset

During the last few years , I have been working for 3 employers. Life hasnt been the same , from a Customer Services Executives Job role to a Teller and now I am a Programmer as I always wanted. Life hasnt been the same since I completed school , a lot of experience which actually helped me understand how this world is build a little bit better. Unlike every other techonological junkie , even I try to find my self pictured as a person who has stake in this whole electroic world. See how Google and Facebook dominates our individual lives even without us noticing.

Lot of my friends from school ended up entering this whole world of IT. A lot of private institutions a responsible for the large amount IT and Software graduates / Diploma holders that are out there in Sri Lanka. Some choose the industry just for the mere fact that they couldnt get into the Universities and most widely thought programs were on IT it self. Although I must admit that there were a few who joined the wave in the latter part of there teenage lives and went up high on the industry. This was mainly due to the fact the a lot of individuals who loved what they did continuously aimed in learning and actually enjoyed that.

During the last few years IT related exports have reached high on the export market. Mostly the software development and related services were outsources. But now apart from that many IT job roles are being out sourced. From IT help desk staff , Network Engineers , Project Managers , Web Designers , Graphic Designers etc …With fast growth of the market , the demand for IT graduates have increased and yes the competition has increased massively. If you look around you every day you might bump across a Software Engineer , DBA etc … on your way home. The funny thing was as of now , the demand for IT services , mainly from overseas projects if high. A lot of projects are being outsourced and we are still a little less on the number of staff we can provide for these services.

Another aspect which stared addressing these is are freelance sites. Many of these web sites provide individuals and corporate’s to work together or even among them selves. If you google around you will find a lot of Sri Lankan students , or even full time Freelancers working with the help of internet. This massive growth is what led the beginning of startups. If you look at a job site ie. topjobs.lk , you will find Companies with a hand full of employees working on Foreign projects and earning massively. This is good in away , a lot of foreign exchange is brought into Sri Lanka because of this. But the drawback is a lot of job roles are being less evaluated , Some individuals are hired for a mere LKR 5000 (USD 50) as developers. Where as they have to work there ass off for the pocket money and the knowledge. Luckily one thing all these Enterpruners have figured out is a lot of young individuals tradeoff experience for the correct value of the job. And they go ahead and work day and night learning , learning and get paid like beggers. I can not blame the individuals who do this just that the culture and the mind set of almost everyone in this country is like that. Education and learning experiences are valued over other luxuries. That’s why you find  even some unfortunate people in the streets , beg for the mercy of other people but are thoughtful to send their children to school so that they will not have to face that misfortune. I just hope that the child remembers the past, if not the whole effort of his parents will be just blown away once he becomes successful in life and feels ashamed about the parents.

The moral here is that , learning or the need to learn is far more valuable in this country than other luxuries.

Hello world!

I have been a bit busy lately. Soon after my site was hacked by some Arabian hacked I lost faith in in WordPress :( althougth being a programmer by profession I had to look into what has happend exactly. In a way its not a fault with WordPress , its my careless passwords and the urge to test some uncertified plugins which let this bastered to hack into my site. Nevertheless , mistakes are lessons in life. So when shit happens you learn something thats never thought in school.

When I look back in to the recent past , apart from being a technical junkie and going after all this latest technological advancements I have never done anything productive. I mean in a sociological way , you know it not easy to act this professional.

With the Hello World post I though of giving some insights about the importance of reading ! Yeah READING.

A few years ago , when I was in school , there was a time when we just grab anything that I can find and read. Let it be a old paper in the dumpster or even a book that I have read few years back , any text book. Basically at that point it was anything that I could get my hands on so that I have plenty of reading time. As I grew life got more complecated so many things to look after , so much of responsibilities etc .. And eventually reading was limited to more technical and acedemic books over to other material where there are tips for life.

Recently I read a book written by Richard Brandson, one inspiring thing that he had said was. Although how busy he got, he always kept time to read more and write more. This really inspired me , before that I used to tell me , I have so much of things to do in life office work , exams etc … and I dont actually have anytime at all to read. But this isn’t fact. Truth is I kept lying to my self so that I dont have to actually find time to read.

So stop lying to your self , the idioms in society didnt come from no where. Reading does complete a man. Self learning books , Philosophical material and Socialogica aspects enriches your view on society. And it does actually help you a lot in life , when you face similar realities that you have read in the book.
